Jigsaw Method

Wondering why a jigsaw works in getting human into attention and cooperation? Well, if you do like jigsaws, there is a pedagogy with this method. It is more of student-directed approach, persistently entice student into attention, and offer significant performance with respect to interaction between class members.

In jigsaw method, a 'jigsaw' is created on the subtopics or number of pages on certain articles. Each 'piece' of jigsaw stands for each subtopics or pages on that articles. They are best to be labelled A, B, C, D, E and F (according to the number of subtopics, the bigger they are, the more diverse jigsaw will be). The objective is to segregate students into groups of 'experts' where they will talk on their 'expertise'.

For example, a class may consist of 30 students. One article with 6 pages will be given to them. With this, there will be , first , 6 group of experts, namely A, B, C, D, E and F with respect to each pages.

Next, the class will be divided into groups of A, B, C,D, E and F. Several minutes will be allocated for them to discuss the page in their group.

Subsequently, they are asked to number themselves from 1 to 6. Then, every student with number 1 will regroup into mixed of experts, called group 1. This continues up to group 6.

More time will be allocated for them, say ,30 minutes, to really discuss, and are expected to come out with a summary of those pages. During this, they will combine their discussion in putting the big picture of the subtopics.

We might be able to produce such jigsaws in most of the class, particularly the subject with technical knowledge which needs most of concept memorization. We have not observe the drawback yet. So, be patient and keep following us!
